Pleats

Heritages, wipes, beetroot dye, wire and thread, 2020

Off-cuts from a wet-wipe factory are pleated and embroidered to create odd, ambiguous but beautiful pieces of textiles. Some are dyed using natural waste from Kath’s kitchen; raspberry teabags, beetroot peelings, avocado skins and chamomile flowers. They explore a fluid femininity, environmental concerns and feminist ideas around domestic labour.

Baby-wipes, red onion dye, cornstarch, thread

Recording the rhythms and routines of the day in lines and pleats, using washed and embellished together baby wipes. This waste material is coloured by another waste material from my kitchen, red onions, which is either mixed with starch and then baked in the oven, or the wipes are wrapped, dipped in the dye and left to dry using shibori techniques.

Nothing has to be wasted, the wrinkles of the day can be become beautiful with time.
